A memorandum on cooperation between Armenian and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime will be signed

22 / 10 / 2013

Secretary of the National Security Council Artur Baghdasaryan received the delegation headed by Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna, Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime Yury Fedotov, who arrived in Armenia on an official visit on October 21-23.

Expressing gratitude for the warm reception, Yury Fedotov noted that the purpose of his visit to Armenia is to establish and develop cooperation between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the state agencies of Armenia. He also noted that no country can fight against illegal drug trafficking alone. It can be more coordinated and effective if there is a cooperation and a list of specific measures.

The NSC Secretary emphasized the importance of Yury Fedotov's visit and expressed readiness to develop and deepen the cooperation. Artur Baghdasaryan mentioned in his speech that the Republic of Armenia is effectively fighting against the illegal drug trafficking as a result of which the indicators of drug use and distribution in Armenia are quite low today.

Artur Baghdasaryan also informed that under his leadership there is an interdepartmental commission dealing with the fight against illegal drug trafficking and the NSC staff has elaborated a national strategy on fighting against drug addiction which will soon be approved at the session of the Security Council.

Artur Baghdasaryan noted that this and many other measures allow us to effectively fight against this evil in Armenia.

Artur Baghdasaryan and Yuri Fedotov agreed on signing a memorandum of cooperation between Armenia and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in the near future.
