Probation to be introduced in Armenia
29 / 06 / 2012
Secretary of the National Security Council Artur Baghdasaryan attended a seminar discussion devoted to creation of a probation service in Armenia. In his welcoming remarks, Baghdasaryan specifically said:
“Measures must be taken toward reducing the load of correctional facilities and carrying out reforms in the means of punishment for those persons who do not pose a threat to society.”
The creation of a probation service in Armenia is included in the 2012-2016 judiciary reforms and in the 2012-2013 Armenia-EU Program.
In Baghdasaryan’s words, probation—as an alternative form of sentencing—has several advantages, and the founding of a probation institution in Armenia will contribute to correcting the persons who committed crimes and their reintegration into society.
Also, the NSC Secretary stressed that it is indispensable to clearly specify the cases and circumstances for resorting to probation, in order to reduce corruption risks in the country, and he underscored the need to clarify the forms and legal bases for cooperation between the probation service and other correctional services.
