Armenia will cooperate with FRONTEX on border security issues

Arthur Baghdasaryan, Secretary of the National Security Council, received Graham Liz, Special Adviser to the Executive Director of the European Union's External Border Operations Management Agency (FRONTEX) and Rick Weijermans, External Relations Officer.
During Arthur Baghdasaryan's visit to Warsaw in November last year, an agreement was reached with the Director General of the agency to start a cooperation between Armenia and FRONTEX, the result of which should be the signing of an agreement on technical cooperation.
The Agency plays a key role in the development of an integrated border management model, ensuring the security of the EU's external borders, as well as contributing to the development of cooperation with third countries and the targeted management of migration flows.
The Agency works in close cooperation with the bodies responsible for the security of the European Union and its external borders, in particular the law enforcement agencies responsible for Europol, customs, phytosanitary and livestock surveillance, internal and border security.
During the meeting the possibilities of cooperation in the mentioned fields were discussed.
An agreement was reached to sign a bilateral cooperation agreement in September, which will allow implementation of joint operations and pilot projects. Arthur Baghdasaryan noted that the signing of the agreement will be a great importance for having infrastructures in compliance with EU standards, for creating certified laboratories, as well as for training of qualified personnel.
The Agency has already concluded bilateral cooperation agreements with 13 EU member states, which are included in the Schengen area.
